Tree Service Spring Maintenance
Spring Maintenance Tree Service
Spring is finally here and our trees in Jasper and surrounding areas will be blooming soon. There are steps you can take to ensure your trees remain healthy for not only this year, but for many years to come. I know it’s hard to believe, but your trees need some attention and care.
Now is a great time to give your trees some extra attention of love, because they have been sleeping for the last 4 months. Most homes and businesses will have debris starting to build up around the base of the tree and it’s vital the base is cleaned up.
It’s important to clean up around the tree if the harsh winter left it needing some help. Make sure you have also removed any weeds that have grown around the trunk. Now is the easiest time of year to do that, as they are also starting to grow. You will also want to remove any dead leaves and sticks that might be around.
It’s Time for some Mulch
Once you get the area cleaned up, we recommend putting some mulch at the base of the tree. A good base of mulch would be 3 to 4 inches deep all the way around the trunk of the tree. By laying mulch at the base of the tree, it allows it to keep moisture which it needs to grow healthy. Without the mulch, the rain water can simply run off and the tree wouldn’t get as much water as it does with mulch.
If you have a young tree (under 3 years old), you should also keep it watered near the base of the tree trunk, but if you have an older, well established tree, don’t water it at the base because the roots extend out. Water the roots in this case. Tree roots can be 2 feet below the ground, so instead of watering often, you should soak the area, so that the roots get plenty of water deep down. This will help them retain the water as well.
Springtime is also a great time to prune your trees because it has been sleeping over the past 3 or 4 months. Be sure to remove all dead and diseased branches during the trimming process. If you have a more established tree, we highly recommend letting professionals like us cut them for you. The cuts need to be made in specific locations and if it’s a taller tree, you would risk serious injury.
Now that you have the area of your tree cleaned up, the tree watered and pruned, it’s now a good time to fertilize your trees. It’s best to fertilize in the spring right before your trees start to blossom. You should apply the fertilizer directly on the drip line of the tree.
